Medical officer is otherwise known as health officer and health administrator who work for administering different aspects of health care center or hospital. He is responsible for providing quality services within the system or hospital. He would have dealings with doctors, hospitals and health care centers.
Job description
The medical officer in-charge has multiple roles to perform apart from being a clinician.

He is responsible for giving emergency medical care to the in-patients

He should manage the entire team of medical staff

He routinely visits the in-patient and suggest suitable drugs/treatments after assessing the health condition

He examines the case sheet of every patient to complete admission formalities and to judge clinical findings

He should be available round the clock in the hospital and attend even during night time in case of emergency

He works in coordination with consultants and specialists and follows the treatment for each patient

Job duties
The daily duty of a medical officer begins with visiting the entire clinic or hospital for which he is in-charge. He makes visit to the room of each patient and records his observation in the case history sheet.

He often meets doctors and specialists to discuss about clinical procedures implemented daily

He plans the treatment and diet schedule for each patient who gets admitted in the hospital

He monitors the treatment procedure along with nursing staff

He can introduce new medical staff to the hospital and give him proper training

He should provide feedback about other medical staffs to the chief medical director

He also plans for developing infrastructure and buying new appliances for the hospital

He formulates budget for constructing new operation theater

Works with physiotherapist and other allied staffs to explain the needs of the patient

Skills
To pursue the career of medical officer, you should have completed medical degree and further residency training. In addition you should possess excellent communication skills.

Working environment
The workplace of medical officer remains inside the hospital. Very often he stays within the premises of the hospital taking quality control and care for health care services. He should be familiar with working on computers for computing monthly and yearly budget for the hospital.
Qualification
You should be a qualified doctor with a medical degree to become a medical officer. Further you should have vast experience working as health care service provider and management of hospital. Having sound knowledge about clinical procedure and various modes of treatment is an added advantage.
